Susan E. Furey

November 25, 1952 - October 19, 2018

Susan E. Furey, 65, of Geneva NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 19th, 2018 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina, after a courageous battle against cancer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26th, at 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church in Geneva NY, where Susan often enjoyed singing in the company of church members, as well as her two sons singing in the choir. In lieu of flowers, contributions towards a commemorative tree and plaque would be appreciated. Please send donations to Michael Goodman at 222 Monroe St. Apartment 2R Brooklyn, NY 11216. Susan was born November 25, 1952 in Elmira NY, the daughter of John F. Furey Jr. and Ethel P. Furey, who predeceased her. Susan was a nurturing mother, avid singer and distinguished scholar. She first earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia in 1979, and went on to earn two Master degrees; one in nursing from the University of Virginia, and another in social work form the Virginia Commonwealth University. Susan’s career in the medical field was as impressive as it was vast. She started at Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads NY, as a Charge Nurse in 1972, and went on to hold several titles, such as Clinical Instructor at several universities, most notably the University of Rochester and Yale. In 2004, Susan accepted her dream job as the Behavioral Health Community Program Manager at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center where she oversaw and developed various programs for veterans with serious mental illness in five different Counties. Susan’s work at the VA was a true testament to her complexity and benevolence. Anyone who knew Susan was aware that she was an intellectual liberal, who often opposed wars, but she dedicated her life to working with veterans because of her love of helping people in need. The only thing more impressive than Susan’s career was her humanity and her undying love for her two sons. Susan is survived by her sons: Michael P.F. Goodman of Brooklyn, NY and Samuel A. F. Goodman of Auburn, NY; her sister, Evelyn Burroughs of Elmira, NY; nieces, Angella C. Emmanuel of New Bern NC, and Jessica L. Moreno and her children Nicholas Moreno and Francesca Moreno of Plymouth, MA. She will be especially missed by close friends Gail and Mike Cook of Durham, NC who helped immensely throughout her treatment.
